Currently, HRM is not only restricted to helpful role in the organizational functioning but in reality it is taking a guide in developing strategic and competitive edge by being involved in making strategic decisions.

Characteristics of HRM

·    Strategic nature: - A long-term, strategic view of human resources, contrasting with earlier ad-hoc, reactive approaches.
·    Organizational structure: - Flexible with core of key employees surrounded by peripheral shells.
·    Recruitment: - Sophisticated recruitment for all employees strong internal labor market for core employees.
·    Training and Development: - Learning of organizational culture.
·    Organization of the HR function: - Largely integrated into line management for day-to-day HR issues.
·    Service function:  - HRM is not a profit centre. It provides all other functional departments. But the basic responsibility always lies with the line managers. The HR Manager has line power only within his own department, but has staff power as far as other departments are concerned.
·    It is pervasive: - Development of HRM covers all levels and all categories of people, and management and operational staff. No discrimination is made between any levels or categories. All those who are managers have to perform HRM. It is pervasive also because it is required in every department of the organization. All kinds of organizations, profit or non-profit making, have to follow HRM.
