Definition

Employee turnover, or employee turnover rate, is the measurement of the number of employees who leave an organization during a specified time period, typically one year.
While an organization usually measures the total number of employees who leave, turnover can also apply to subcategories within an organization like individual departments or demographic groups.

Types of Turnover

Turnover might acquire lots of forms. It can be categorized as “internal” or “external”. Internal turnover engages employees leaving their existing positions and taking new positions within the same organization.

Mutually positive (such as increased confidence from the transform of duty and manager) and negative (such as project/relational disruption, or the Peter Principle) effects of internal turnover stay alive, and therefore, it may be similarly significant to observe this form of turnover as it is to monitor its external counterpart.

Internal turnover might be moderated and controlled by classic HR mechanisms, such as an internal recruitment policy or formal succession planning. Internal turnover, called internal transfers, is usually measured a chance to assist employees in their career development while minimizing the more costly external turnover.

A large number of internal transfers leaving a particular department or division might signal problems in that area except the position is a designated stepping stone position
